Artist AT53 Vintage Green electric guitar review, front view

The AT53 is the guitar for the player who wants something a bit different from the wall of Strat copies. Vintage Green with an aged-style finish, a featherweight paulownia body, and a spec sheet that embarrasses guitars costing hundreds more.

Full disclosure on my experience: I have taught extensively on the AT series, which shares this neck, these tuners and this general feel, though I have not logged the same hours on this exact finish. Everything below reflects that experience plus a proper look at the AT53's specifications.

The short version: if twang, indie, roots and classic rock are your thing, and you want a guitar light enough to play standing up all afternoon, this is one of the most interesting options in Artist's range.

What we like

  • Paulownia bodies are seriously light. For kids, smaller players, or anyone who finds most electrics heavy, this matters more than any spec.
  • Locking tuners at this price is seriously rare, and string changes go from chore to formality.
  • Stainless steel frets essentially remove the refret question. Play it for a decade and it will still feel fresh.
  • The aged Vintage Green finish looks like a guitar with history, in a good way.

Honest limitations

  • This is a single-coil voiced T-style. If you want humbucker chunk for metal, this is the wrong shape of guitar (look at the AS30 or AS72).
  • The aged finish divides opinion. If you want glossy and pristine, it will not be your look.
  • Paulownia is light, and some players notice a slightly different acoustic character compared to heavier woods. Plugged in, it is a non-issue.

Buy it if

  • Indie, roots, country, blues and classic rock players
  • Anyone who wants a lightweight guitar for long sessions or small frames
  • Players who want premium details (locking tuners, stainless frets) without the premium price

Skip it if

  • Metal and high-gain players who want a bridge humbucker
  • Anyone who wants a glossy modern finish

AT53 Vintage Green FAQ

Is the Artist AT53 good for beginners?

Yes, with one caveat about style. It plays easily (light body, comfortable neck, low action), so beginners get on with it fine. But its single-coil T-style voice suits indie, roots, country, blues and classic rock best. A beginner chasing metal tones would be happier with the AS30. If you already have a guitar you like, stick with it. If you are starting fresh and indie, roots or classic rock is your thing, definitely check out the AT53.

What is the Artist AT53 made of?

A paulownia body in a Vintage Green nitro finish, a one-piece quarter-sawn roasted maple neck, a rosewood fretboard with 22 stainless steel frets, high-grade locking tuners, and hand-wound pickups.

Why do locking tuners matter on a beginner guitar?

They make string changes much faster and help tuning stability, which removes two common beginner frustrations. Getting them at this price is rare.
